Lithograph of the journey across the plains of the Punjab between Ludiana and Amritsar by L.H. de Rudder (1807-1881) after an original drawing of 1842 by Prince Aleksandr Mikhailovich Saltuikov and published in 1848. This scene depicts Prince Saltuikov travelling in a palanquin. Ludhiana is situated on the route that connects Delhi and Amritsar and was founded by princes of the Lodi dynasty of Delhi in 1480. At the time of Prince Saltuikov's visit to Ludhiana, the town was an important British cantonment. The distance between the two towns is around 135 kms. Prince Saltuikov left Ludhiana on the 20 February 1842 and arrived at Amritsar on the 1 March 1842. Amritsar was founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru, Ram Das.
