Fort St. George, Madras, c.1731
The fort is shown as viewed from the sea. The Government buildings and the various parts of the fortifications stand out with great distinctness. To the left of the flag-tower is seen St. Mary’s Church (consecrated in 1680, and the first church to be erected by the British in India). The hilly background is largely imaginary, and the ships too near the shore.
