The island of St. Helena, as seen from the north west, with Jamestown, the principal settlement and the head-quarters of the government, in the centre of the picture. Along the sea-front runs a double wall of fortifications, on the centre bastion of which flies the British flag. On either side of the town rise preipitous cliffs, that on the right being Ladder Hill, and that on the left Rupert’s Hill. In the foreground are ships under English colours.
