Fort St. David, Madras. Painted c.1763
In the centre, a large ship, flying the East India Company’s flag. Fort St. David, on the shore to the left; on the extreme left a building with Dutch colours. A small detached British fort is shown on the right.
Fort St. David, situated near Cuddalore, was acquired in 1690. Upon the loss of Madras, in 1746, it became the head-quarters of the Presidency and remained so until Madras was restored in 1749. The Fort was prominent in the wars between the English and the French, and was twice captured by the latter.
The only other known view is one in Dalrymple’s Charts (1779), showing the fort as it was in 1754. It is not easy to reconcile the two, and this fact throws some doubt upon the accuracy of the painting, especially as Swaine was never in India. In 1763 he exhibited ‘The great storm at Fort St. David in the East Indies in which several of His Majesty’s ships, under the command of Admiral Boscawen were lost'.
