View of Outradrug (Mysore). Between 1790 and 1792. Artist(s): Allan, Sir Alexander, 1st Baronet (1764-1820)
- Scope & Content:
-
Pen-and-ink and water-colour drawing of the fortress at Outradrug (Hutridurga) in Karnataka by 1st Baronet Sir Alexander Allan (1764-1820), dating to between 1790 and 1792.
Inscribed on back in ink: ‘View of Outradroog.’
Note: Outradrug was captured by Colonel Stuart in December 1791.
The hill is part of a range that runs through the Tumkur District, in the former kingdom of Mysore, near to Bangalore. This fortress was of strategic importance during the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century when the British fought against the Rajas of Mysore, Haidar Ali (c.1722 - 1782) and his eldest son, Tipu Sultan (1753 -1799). The fort was small but situated on an inaccessible rock. It was taken by British forces under Colonel Stuart in June 1791, a particularly convenient victory as the area was well stocked with cattle, sheep and grain which were used to provide sustenance for the troops.
