Carved sides of a pillar. Amaravati.

Pen and ink drawing of two sides of a pillar carved in low relief from Amaravati. On the left, the pillar is decorated with a tree surrounded by a throne with a pair of footprints below. Above the tree is a border decorated with foliage and a half lotus. The right hand pillar is decorated with a chaitya hall with an empty throne and umbrella inside. The structure, with a domed roof, also has chaitya arches along the top. Above this is a rising sun with rays of light emanating from it. A scale has been drawn in pencil at the bottom of the page. See WD1547 for other sides of pillar. The sculpture from which these drawings were taken are illustrated in Burgess, James ‘The Buddhist Stupas of Amaravati and Jaggayyapeta’, Trubner & co. London, 1887, plate XLV, no. 2&3.
