Pen and ink drawing of a fragment of a narrative frieze from Amaravati. The frieze is split into three registers. From left to right:
a. The great Departure of Siddhartha from his palace, accompanied by his horse and attendant, who holds an umbrella above Siddhartha’s head. Ganas are shown under the hooves of the horse to silence any noise they might make.
b. Siddhartha in his harem surrounded by sleeping women. Siddhartha is seated on a throne with a large halo behind his head.
c. A mithuna couple.
At the bottom of the frieze is a border of lion heads, some of which are damaged. There is a scale drawn at the bottom of the page. The sculpture from which this drawing was taken from, is in the British Museum (Asia 1880,0709.112).
Inscription: ‘No 33. Amaravati. Reduce by 1/3 -. S. N. Apparow Moodelyar’ in pencil and ‘J. Burgess’ signed in ink.
