Fragment of Dome slab. Amaravati
- Scope & Content:
-
Pen and ink drawing of a fragment of a dome slab from Amaravati. The stone has a carved relief depicting the Great Departure of Siddhartha from the palace at Kapilavastu. It is represented by Siddhartha’s horse, Kanthaka, riderless, leaving through a torana (gateway), accompanied by an attendant holding an umbrella above him. The umbrella represents the presence of the Siddhartha even though he is not shown. Preceding Kanthaka are two figures on foot and the lower torso of two flying figures can be seen. Above the torana are chaitya shaped gable ends which are surmounted by a band of animals and the feet of two figures. There is a scale at the bottom of the page. This drawing is similar to the lower register of a drawing in the Mackenzie collection (WD1061 f.24). The sculpture from which this drawing was taken is currently in the Government Museum, Chennai.
Inscription: ‘Stone of Bezwada. S. N. (writing goes off the page)’. In pencil.
Stamped in blue ink: ‘Jas Burgess, L. L. D. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY’
