The Bailey Guard Gate at the Residency, Lucknow (U.P.). 24 February 1870. Artist(s): Chevalier, Nicholas (1828-1902)
- Scope & Content:
-
Pencil, pastel and wash drawing of the Bailey Guard Gate at the Residency, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) by Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902), dated 24 February 1870.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘The Bailey Guard Gate at the residency, Lucknow. N. Chevalier. 24.2.70.’
The Baillie Guard Gateway was named after Major John Baillie, who was the British Resident in Lucknow from 1811-1815. The gateway was the entrance to the Residency Complex started in 1780 by Asaf-ud-Daulla and completed in 1800 in the reign of Saddat Ali. The Residency and the surrounding buildings were subsequently occupied by British officials and the complex was a key site in the Uprising of 1857. Approximately 3000 British inhabitants took refuge from Indian soldiers within the complex until they were finally liberated in November 1857 by troops serving under Sir Colin Campbell. The site is now a national monument. The rubble has been landscaped to provide a setting for the surviving ruins, which still convey the grandeur of the original structures.
