Interior of the Hussainabad Imambara Lucknow (U.P.). 4 March 1870. Artist(s): Chevalier, Nicholas (1828-1902)
- Scope & Content:
-
Pencil drawing of the interior of the Hussainabad Imambara in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh by Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902), dated 4 March 1870.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘Huseinabad-Imambara, the gallery and trusses are of wood (brown). N.C. 4.3.70.’
The Husainabad Imambara was built by Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah in 1837 as both a famine relief project and as a mausoleum for himself and his mother. The King’s throne and ornate 'tazia' or replicas of the tombs at Karbal adorn the interior and the walls of the mausoleum are decorated with verses in Arabic, chandeliers, gilded mirrors and colourful stucco. Replicas of the Taj Mahal, the seventeenth-century tomb of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal, are situated on either side of the Imambara in the large courtyard.
