View from the Katugastota Bridge over the River Mahaveliganga, with Hantane Peak in the distance (Ceylon). 18 April 1870. Artist(s): Chevalier, Nicholas (1828-1902)
- Scope & Content:
-
Pencil drawing of a view from the Katugastota Bridge over the River Mahaveliganga, with Hantane Peak in the distance in Sri Lanka, by Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902), dated 18th April 1870.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘View from Kattugastotte bridge Hantane Pk. N. Chevalier. 18.4.70. View from Kattugustotte bridge. Mahavillaganga River, Ceylon.’
J.Cordiner described this river in his notes on a journey from Trincomallee to Matura in April and May of 1802 in his 'Description of Ceylon' (London, 1807): "...we forded the Maha-Villa Ganga, a most beautiful river, which at present forms only a shallow stream, but must, from the extent of its bed, and height of the banks, be very broad and deep during the rainy season. The Maha-Villa Ganga takes its rise in the Candian country, near Adam's Peak, and is the principal river on this side of the island. It is revered...and its waters are in high estimation amongst them for the preservation of health and the cure of diseases."
