Label inscribed: ‘Samuel Davis F.R.S. Judge of Benares, and in 1799 received the thanks of the governor-general for the gallent defence made by him against the usurped Vizier Ali and an armed force.’
Pencil; 23 by 17.8 cm.
Note: The incident referred to in the inscription took place on 14 January 1799, when a mob, followers of Wazir ‘Ali, deposed Nawab of Oudh, attacked Davis in his house at Benares. He defended himself and his family armed only with a spear, until help arrived.
