- Scope & Content:
-
Half-length miniature portrait of Mrs. Sophia Crane, second daughter of John Athanass.
Inscribed on paper pasted to back of miniature:’ Mrs Sophia Crane second Daughter of John Athanass Esqre & Sister to Mrs Charlotte Debnam and Mrs Harriett Keatinge. This miniature was taken by Mrs H Keatinge of her beloved Sister previous to her leaving Calcutta for England. Mrs S. Crane. W. Hudson pinxt. March 1826. Calcutta.’
Water-colour on ivory in original red leather frame; 9.5 by 7.5 cm.
Note: Sophia was born in 1801, a sister of the same name born in 1791 having died in 1797. She married Charles Joshua Crane, son of a Warwickshire clergyman and an Ensign in the Bengal Native Infantry, on 26 October 1816. He was promoted to Lieutenant in the following year, although his military career was not a very successful one, with the early period clouded by a court-martial for debt, subsequently overturned. He was granted furlough in early 1826 and the couple left for England in the May, returning in May 1829. Charlotte married Robert Joseph Debnam, of HM 13th Foot, in 1805 and the youngest sister Harriett, born in 1802, married Thomas Henry Keatinge, described as a Gentleman of Calcutta, in 1821.
