View of an entrance to the temple at Kerdah, near Barrackpore. Artist(s): Moffat, James (1775-1815)
- Scope & Content:
-
View of an entrance to the temple at Kerdah, near Barrackpore
Pencil, pen and brown ink and water-colour; 431 x 660 mm.
Engraved: by J. Moffat as ‘Barrackpore, Pagoda near Khardah,’ and published 1805-10.
Provenance: with Spencer’s Fine Art Auctioneers, Bridlington, June 1971, where purchased for the William and Mildred Archer collection. Purchased with the help of the National Art-Collections Fund, Christie's, lot 30, 24 September 2003.
Note: Although a print made after this view of the Kerdah temple is on paper watermarked 1794, it is likely that the drawing was made circa 1800, and was published with views of Calcutta, Berhampore, Monghyr and Benares between 1805 and 1810. See P. Godrej and P. Rohatgi, ‘Scenic Splendours: India through the printed image’, London, 1989, p. 157, no, ii (l). For the print, see P107.
