Pen and ink and water-colour; 19.4 by 27.4 cm.
Note: The earliest known drawing of the Singapore Institution which was founded at a meeting convened by Raffles on 1 April 1823 for the cultivation of Asian languages, the education of the sons of Malay rulers, and the moral and intellectual improvement of the peoples of Asia. It was to comprise a Malay and a Chinese College, and there was also to be a Department of Science. A sum in excess of -£4,000 was subscribed for its establishments and most of this was allocated for the erection of a building designed by Lieutenant Philip Jackson (1802-79), the Settlement Engineer. It was not until the end of 1827 that an edifice arose on the site near the sea which had been set aside by Raffles, but it was so badly constructed that it virtually fell into ruins. In 1836 it was resolved that another effort should be made to complete the building, and the task was given to G.D. Coleman, the Superintendent of Public Works in Singapore. Work on the two-storey construction was finished late in 1837 when it was first used as a school. A wing was added in 1839 and another in 1841, at which time the present drawing was made by J.A. Marsh, who was probably on Coleman's staff.
