Mesigit Sela, Nusa Kambangan, Java. c.1815.
Probably by J. Knops.
Inscribed on front in pencil in the hand of Captain G.P. Baker: ‘Entrance to the Great Cavern, Musigid Selo, in the Island of Nooso Cambangan - entirely composed of Stalactytes - Vide Plan of the Cavern’.
Wash; 40.6 by 52.2 cm.
Note: The cave known as Mesigit Sela, the Stone Mosque, or the Mosque in the Rock, lies on the northern coast of Nusa Kambangan almost in the middle of the island. The cave is about fifty yards deep and about half as wide, and is regarded as a holy sanctuary by the local people. The plan of the cavern, referred to in the caption to the drawing, is apparently not extant. Baker and his party visited the cave from the north, by sailing a small craft through the narrow strait which separates Nusa Kambangan from the mainland of Java. Soundings were taken and an eye-sketch made of the strait, after which an extensive survey was made of the bay Segara Anakan, which Baker designated the Western Harbour. This represented the boundary of the native provinces of Java and the western-most point of Baker's survey.
