An active volcano
- Scope & Content:
-
An active volcano, Java. c.1814-15.
Probably by a Dutch artist.
Wash; 34.2 by 48.5 cm.
Watermark: Crowned lion rampant with sword ‘J.H. & Z.’
Note: On first impression this drawing seems to depict a volcanic island, not unlike Sangeang Api, near Flores, in eastern Indonesia. But in the list of drawings in the Baker Manuscripts in the Royal Asiatic Society, London, is mentioned a 'View of the Volcanic Remains on the Dieng Mt or Gunung Prahu', and one wonders, if this in fact refers to the present drawing, whether it is simply a rough and inexact profile taken from the Dieng plateau. Some idea of what may have been intended by the artist in his representation of the lower reaches of the mountain and its vegetation may be gained by reference to the coloured lithograph entitled 'Dieng' by C.W. Mieling, after a drawing by Frans Junghuhn, in the Atlas of plates accompanying the latter's ‘Java, zijne gedaante, zijn plantentooi en inwendige’ ‘bouw’ (The Hague, 1853-4).
