East wing of Government House. Buitenzorg
- Scope & Content:
-
East wing of Government House, Buitenzorg, Java. c.1816.
Probably by a Dutch artist.
Pencil and water-colour; 32 by 38 cm.
Watermark: ‘Fleur-de-lis’ and crown.
Note: This unfinished pencil and water-colour drawing depicts the east wing of Government House as seen from the carriage-way in front of the main building after its reconstruction by the British. The drawing is squared for enlargement, but for what precise purpose is uncertain. According to Dr. Joseph Arnold, who stayed at Buitenzorg in September 1815, the central building was used by Raffles himself, the east wing (shown here) for offices, and the west wing, which was smaller, for the accommodation of visitors. The architectural detail of the west wing is depicted in W. Troost's dramatic painting of Government House during the earthquake of 1834 showing it little changed from Raffles's day. The earthquake caused extensive damage to the whole building which was largely rebuilt with a handsome colonnaded facade.
