'Inscribed on reverse: Gunung Salak and the River Chidami'. Artist(s): Fendall, Mary (1794-1886)
- Scope & Content:
-
Gunung salak and the Tjisadane, Buitenzorg (Bogor), Java. 1816.
By Mary Fendall (1794-1886).
Inscribed on reverse in pencil: ‘Gunung Salak and the River Chidami’. On the front: ‘Riding party-crossing’ ... ‘6 or 7 miles.’ The drawing is backed with a sheet of the ‘Prince of Wales’ ‘Island Gazette,’ dated 30 March 1816.
Pencil; 29.8 by 45 cm.
Note: The drawing has been made upstream on the Tjisadane facing Gunung Salak. The scene is reproduced in an anonymous uncoloured aquatint entitled 'Gunong Salak near Buitenzorg & the River Chidami', facing page 225 of Lady Raffles's ‘Memoir’, but with the addition of a party of seven horse riders crossing the Tjisadane in the middle foreground, and a more extensive range of tropical vegetation. The present drawing is clearly the model for the aquatint as the inscription on the front of the drawing with respect to a riding party further confirms. The aquatint itself is almost certainly by William Daniell.
