The picquet at Flagstaff Tower on top of the Ridge at Delhi, with part of the camp, 1857.
‘No. 3. View of the Flagstaff Tower and picket post on the height in our front; the road leading down to the right past the tents leads to camp and the continuation of this road in the opposite direction leads in nearly a straight line to the Cashmere Gate of the City; just in front of the tower is a small breastwork across the road mounting 2 field guns which completely command it for 700 yards, these guns can just be seen on the left of view; the third road running from the foreground to the tower is a portion of that which runs along the top of the whole ridge past the little picket house seen in the distance, past the Mosque observatory, Hindoo Rao’s House and on to the Subzee Mundee. Lieut. F.L. Tandy, R.E., Bengal Sappers & Miners.’
Note: Flagstaff Tower seems to have been built when the Delhi Cantonment was laid out beneath it, and is the same architectural style as Ludlow Castle. Here the women and children congregated on 11 May 1857, before fleeing towards Karnal.
