A group of Malabari men, women and children sitting and standing outside a building near the sea. Artist(s): Tresham, Henry (1750-1814)
- Scope & Content:
-
A group of men, women and children sitting and standing outside a building near the sea.
Note: Admiral Pierre Andre de Suffren (1726-88) fought four indecisive naval battles against Admiral Sir Edward Hughes during the Mysore Wars and returned to France after the Treaty of Paris in 1783, arriving at Toulon in March 1784. He had joined the Knights of Malta as a child, was appointed in absentia Captain-General of the Maltese fleet in 1780, which entitled him to the rank of Bailiff, and became Ambassador to the Knights of Malta in Paris after his return to France. He engaged a group of fifty-one men and women from the Coromandel Coast for three years to teach cotton weaving in Malta, see C. Cunat, ‘Historie du Bailli de Suffren’, Rennes, 1852, p.339.
It is known Tresham was in Sicily, and it is possible he also visited Malta.
