Shipping at anchor, Aden, with mules and their drivers in the foreground. Artist(s): Waddell, Charles Douglas (1821-1884)
- Scope & Content:
-
Shipping at anchor, Aden, with mules and their drivers in the foreground.
Inscribed: ‘Aden. Back Bay April 25th/37’ and on reverse: ‘Steamer Point, Aden from the Hotel’.
Pencil; 20.3 by 32.3 cm.
Note: The inscription on the front appears to have been overwritten and a mistake made in tracing the year. The paper is watermarked 1846. The Madras Artillery were in Aden in that year for the defence of the garrison during a local attempt to engage in a religious war against the British. Although Aden was captured by the Bombay Army in 1840 the Presidency could not spare troops to hold it, and the greater part of the garrison was usually supplied from Madras.
