Large silk Indian flag, 1947.

A large Indian flag made of three sewn together panels of silk. It is said to have been the first Indian flag flown over the Lucknow Secretariat buildings after Independence in 1947.
The flag was presented to the India Office Collections in 1983-1984 as part of Percy William Elliott's private papers (Mss Eur D1038). Percy Elliott (1904-82), born Ahson Ali Khan, was a clerk and superintendent at the Lucknow Secretariat from 1927 to 1947.
Dimensions: 180 by 270 cm.
In 2012 the flag was transferred to the British Library's Prints and Drawings section.
