Calcutta: view taken from the house of Thomas Graham in Chowringhee with Fort William and the Hooghly in the background. January or February 1803.
Note: Drawing for 'Calcutta', plate 3, ‘Views.’ Described Valentia, i, 61-3, 235-9.
The drawing is a preparatory work for plate 3 'Calcutta' of his 'Twenty Four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt'. This view was taken from Thomas Graham's house in Chowringhee with Fort William and the River Hooghly in the background. Viscount Valentia wrote, "Mr Graham resides in Chouringee, in a very excellent house, where I found apartments prepared for me, and for Mr Salt...Chouringee, an entire village of palaces, runs for a considerable length at right angles with it [the Maidan], and altogether, forms the finest view I ever beheld in any city."
