Approach to the waterfall at Papanasam via steps carved out ot the rock (‘the path is continued up the face of this rock by means of a flight of steps’), the water of the river Tambraparni thundering below, first sketched 1-2 August 1792.
Pencil and brown and grey wash, watermark, Strasburg Lily; 431 x 558 mm.
Inscribed: ‘223. Pappanasum’ (on the reverse)
Provenance: Sotheby’s, London, December 1972, where purchased for the William and Mildred Archer collection (according to the owner’s notes on provenance, catalogue untraced). Purchased with the assistance of the National Art-Collections Fund, Christie’s, lot 7, 24 September 2003.
Note: The waterfall of Papanasam on the river Tambraparni as it descends from the mountains was one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in south India. Thomas and William Daniell visited the waterfall on 31 July 1792, and sketched various views of it, and the waterfalls on the river upstream (Banatirtham, and the Pumbar Falls in the distance), before moving further south on 4 August.
