Panoramic view of the old and new towns of Gaya with the surrounding country taken from the hills on the opposite side of the Phalgu river, the old town being dominated by the Visnupad temple. Considerable activity on the banks of and in the river below, with little villages hidden among the rocks in the foregound.
By Bhavani Baksh, an Indian artist at Gaya, c.1813-14.
Inscribed on back: ‘A View of the Old & New Town of Gaya. F.G.’ , with variants of this inscription elsewhere.
Water-colour, on four pieces of paper stuck together; 467 by 1260 mm in all, 420 by 1225 mm within painted black border.
