Note: See previous note. Mr. Samuel Johnston, Paymaster at Madurai, was the first Company official to occupy the house, and had to spend a considerable amount of money to put it into order after having obtained possession of it from the Nawab of Arcot in 1782. See Madura DG 1906, pp. 261-4.
