An album containing 409 drawings (also 2 photographs, ff. 126, 127) made in Delhi district, the Punjab, the Punjab States and on board ship. 1861-89.
Entitled: ‘Heads of the People.’
Inscribed on f.i: ‘Colonel A.F.P. Harcourt, his Drawings begun Delhi 1864’. ‘Rebound Streatley. 1900’; f.iiv inscribed with incomplete index. Most drawings inscribed with title and date.
Pencil, pen-and-ink and water-colour; size of volume: 15.75 by 10.25 ins.
ff. 44, 40a, 48 and 46b are original drawings for lithographs in A. Harcourt, ‘The Himalayan districts of Kooloo’, ‘Lahoul, and Spitti’ (London, 1871), 96, 146, 234, 302.
The drawings fall into three groups:
(i) Portraits of Indians, often made in the court room, e.g. pleaders, clerks, servants, policemen, tradesmen, cultivators. Most of the portraits show head and shoulders; some are full - length studies.
Portraits of the following rulers are included: Amir Sher ‘Ali Khan of Afghanistan, 1869, f. 3; Amir ‘Abdul Rahman, 1885, ff..114, 115; Nawab of Bahawalpur, 1885, ff.113, 126; Raja of Chamba, 1885, f.114; Raja of Jind, 1885, f.111; Raja of Mandi, 1867, f.28; Raja of Nabha, 1885, ff.111, 114.
