Genre: Architectural Photography
View looking across the valley towards the monastery on the far hillside: 'This vast building, the largest and richest monastery in Tibet, is situated in an embayment amongst the hills, about four miles outside Lhasa. It is officially supposed to contain 7000 Monks, but there are, as a matter of fact, over 10,000 living there. Dre-pung is a monastic town of steep, narrow stone-paved streets and substantial stone houses. It has one vast hall, 300 feet square, where the whole Monastery assembles on great occasions, and there are also four Gon Pas for the four sections into which the Monastery is divided. The hall and the Gon-Pas are dirty, and contain nothing of exceptional value or interest. The Monastery was built about 500 years ago.' Another copy (printed in platinum) at Photo 430/53 (50).
