The Observatory for the Transit of 'Venus' at Shinagawa [Tokyo]. Photographer: Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
View of the open-sided wooden building, with a mixed group of Japanese and Europeans posed in front for the photographer: 'The Transit was observed at Tokei from a temporary observatory erected at Shinagawa, a suburb of Yedo. The observers were Messrs. Scharbau, Klasen and Cheeseman, and the instruments used were the admirable ones ordered by Mr. McVean, the head of the Survey Department, when at home. The day was everything that could be desired; but, of course, it is impossible yet to give the results. We give a photograph of the temporary shed, as it will serve to commemorate a deservedly memorable occasion. The central figure, in front of the edifice, is Sanjo Saneyoshi, Daijo Daijin (Prime Minister) of Japan.'
