View in the grounds of O Hama Go Ten, Tokio, Japan. Photographer: Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
View looking across a wooden footbridge across the lake towards a large stone house: 'O Hama Go Ten is a beautiful pleasaunce on the shore of Yedo Bay, where formerly the Tycoons had their fishing ground. It is a small park with fine trees, and an extensive salt water ornamental pond with little fishing-houses overhanging it, connected by bridges with the banks ... Just before the revolution, a handsome stone house, or bungalow, was built, with the intention of making it capable of accommodating the Yedo ruler, if he felt inclined to make more than a day's sojourn. It was not completed, however, until after the change of régime ... and ... it has been appropriated as a residence for distinguished foreign guests ... It was occupied by H. R. H. the Duke of Edinburgh, during his stay in Tokio, and by H. I. H. Prince Alexis of Russia ... The grounds are now constantly thrown open to the people, who visit them, all dressed in their best, and enjoy them to the fullest extent.'
