Leafless March (Suffolk). Photographer: Emerson, Peter Henry
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Signed in the plate, 'P. H. Emerson.'
Genre: Landscape Photography
View across open land, with a leafless tree and a boy posed beside a stream in the foreground: 'It was a cold day in March that we took these plates ... On the way, as we were going down a sloping field, Friend Farmer stopped and said, 'Wouldn't that make a picture?' pointing at the same time to a flay expanse of marsh stretching to the upland, and glowing with all the subtle colouring and quality of a grey day. The painters assured him it would make a fine picture, and then he confided to us that he had always been struck by that view, and should like it to keep. Here then was the true feeling. This farmer had always been impressed by that particular landscape, seen on his daily round, and he desired it to take with him when he left his farm. So long as he remained there, Nature herself was enough; but his lease was nearly up, and he did not intend to renew it. More commonplace minds would have wanted the façade of the house or a general view of the farmyard, but he would like to take away with him a particular scene which had daily appealed to him...' (p. 68).
