Study of prickly pear orchard and camels, Cairo. Photographer: Frith, Francis

Genre: Landscape Photography
View of a group of baggage camels and keepers in a cactus grove: 'In the outskirts of Cairo, especially on the north, there are large thickets of the cactus which produces the prickly pear. We rarely, however, have seen any of these plants which have attained to such an extraordinary height as those represented in the view, some of which rise more than twelve feet from the ground...The camels in the foreground are objects quite in keeping with the rest of the scene. They are of the heavy kind, used for burdens, and not for riding. That in the centre of the picture is one of the most satisfactory representations of a camel that we have seen, showing all the characteristics that are so difficult to preserve — the graceful bearing of an animal, every detail of whose appearance is rough and coarse — which have generally rendered it an almost hopeless object to the artist. Indeed, excepting Mr Lewis, we do not know one modern artist who has not failed in attempting to draw a camel.'
