SMITH, Sir William Sidney. Manuscript copies (signed by Smith) of various letters by French prisoners (imprisoned in Constantinople) captured after Nelson's victory at Aboukir in August 1798. The prisoners' letters plead for release and are addressed to Spencer Smith, British Ambassador at Constantinople, to the Spanish Ambassador, to the French Foreign Minister, and to Sidney Smith himself. Includes two copies of replies from Spencer and Sidney Smith to the prisoners.
