List of letters transcribed from index is as follows:
1. Memorandum from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 18 Aug 1857. 'Instructions will be telegraphed to General Outram to send 5th and 90th Regiments to Allahabad, if both cannot be spared, one to go directly and the other to follow. General Outram will be informed of the march of Colonel Fisher with Troops towards same destination. He will be requested to employ Flats and Steamers on conveying Regiments to Allahabad'.
2. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 1 Sep 1857. 'Enclosing extract of letter from Colonel Napier [not enclosed] relative to improvement of defences of posts along the Ganges ordered by Sir James Outram and inconveniences caused by presence of ladies'.
3. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 4 Sep 1857. 'A wing of H.M.'s 53rd Regiment having left under command of a Captain, asks permission of Governor General to send Major English left at Fort William with Head Quarters, to command it'.

5. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 14 Sep 1857. 'Returning letter from Mr Young [not enclosed] on the subject of supplies and carriage to be furnished by the Civil authorities for troops marching from Calcutta'.
6. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 16 Sep 1857. 'Colonel Fisher did not receive till too late authority to move his force as a whole. His moving to Sherghotty and reporting from there suggested. Amount of his force stated'.
7. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 17 Sep 1857. 'Report of Officers employed by General Outram for particular purpose probably a mistake. Detachment of H.M.'s 5th Regiment, if to be spared from Bhagulpore, much wanted at Head Quarters of the Regiment. Irregular Cavalry probably knew before they passed the Sone [River] that all the parties by Bullock Train had crossed before the 12th'.
8. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 18 Sep 1857. 'Governor General requested to inform by telegraph Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, that detachment of H.M.'s 53rd are to return from Dorunda to Truck Road etc'.
9. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 20 Sep 1857. 'Enclosing letter from General Outram relative to carriage and supplies, and copy of order issued by him to Commissariat Officer at Benares. Suggestion by General Outram than an Officer unconnected with Commissariat should be employed to overlook and quicken proceedings of departure, deserves attention'. Enclosures: 1. 18. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 15 Oct 1857. 'Encloses telegram from Captain Smyth, Bengal Artillery [not enclosed], showing advance westwards made by 2 camps 32rd Native Infantry. Major English ordered to hasten to Sherghotty, Captain Smyth to re-join him there. Head Quarters 32nd Native Infantry expected at Raneegunge on 18th. Colonbel Barker with 2 guns will be there tomorrow. Detachments of 13th with 2 guns sufficient protection for that Depot. 'Golden Fleece' arrived with 34th Regiment and part of 42nd'.

22. Memorandum, 22 Oct 1857. 'Officers in Command at various Stations urgently desire to know what is to be done with Sepoys returning from furlough etc'.
23. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Calcutta, 24 Oct 1857. 'Rejoiced to learn that display of troops has enabled Captain Osborne to recover his influence in Rewah. Instructions required for march of Madras troops to Cawnpore'.

26. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 5 Nov 1857. 'Since first arrival at Allahabad, whole time devoted to pressing on arrangements for Artillery and Engineers. Woeful small quantity of material collected. Was detailed 4 days by Captain Peel's fight with the Dinapore Mutineers. Complains of Futtehpore Magistrate having prevailed upon late Colonel Powell to undertake this expedition without His Excellency's knowledge. Force between Cawnpore, Bunnee and Alumbagh [Alambagh, Lucknow] about 5000 men. Proposes to go forward on 7th leaving General Windham at Cawnpore. Attack upon Munorshinhgunj[?] by the Nazim expected. Great want of Infantry Soldiers. Attack threatened by Gwalior force from Calpee. Jehanabad recommended instead of Sasseram as a Military post'. The Nana [Sahib] and the Dinapore Mutineers on their way to join Gwalior force. Danger of Futtehpore. Position of Cawnpore much neglected. Praise of Captain Bruce'. Enclosure: Instructions to General Windham, 6 Nov 1857.
28. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 8 Nov 1857. 'Forwarding part of instructions to General Windham before omitted. Nana has crossed at Sherajpore. If he remains the Commander in Chief will attack him, more troops will then be arrived. Engineer's Park to leave for the front next day'. Enclosure: Memorandum by the Chief of the Staff for the Guidance of Major General Wyndham [Windham], Cawnpore, 8 Nov 1857.

29. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Camp near Bunnee, 10 Nov 1857. 'Mr Cavenagh just arrived in disguise. Plan of reaching Lucknow sent by Sir James Outram under consideration. Relief of residency the one object. Force wanted for very essential subsequent operations not to be diverted for settlement of Oudh which can always be done when leisure and sufficiency of troops permit. Country folk will not bring supplies, consequently train of huckeries enormous. Intends to advance on 12th. Infantry formed in 2 Brigades'. Enclosure: Copy of message originally in sent in cipher to Sir James Outram, 10 Nov 1857.
30. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 1 Dec 1857. 'Thanks for congratulations. Describes position of General Windham's force upon return of Commander in Chief to Cawnpore, and consequent measures adopted by His Excellency. Thanks for information about new policy to be adopted towards Jung Bahadoor. Measures which should be adopted by Sir James Outram and with his force'.
31. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 8 Dec 1857. 'Reports success obtained over Gwalior's Troops. Army detained by various causes. Forward involvement of General Grant's Detachment. Orders sent to Sir James Outram. Two Regiments placed at Colonel Franks' disposal. He should be restricted to defence of our frontier. Oudh campaign a consideration for hereafter. Some 17 guns remain with Gwalior rebels, but their ammunition is taken. Orders sent to Colonel Barker to clear Futtehpore District. General Ashburnham wishes to go home; proposed that he should succeed General Cowan at Lahore. General Wilson suggested to command Dinapore Division with Head Quarters at Benares. A General wanted for Cawnpore Division. Civil functionaries thereabouts wanting in energy. Delay in writing explained. Advisable to order a Regiment to be formed at Allahabad'.
32. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 15 Dec 1857. 'Hopes the Governor General will approve of movements announced for clearing the Dooab [Doab]. Congratulates Governor General and Lady Canning upon the prospect of the success of his labours in rescue and pacification of India. Rejoices that the political views of the Government and the proper Military views relative to Sir James Outram's proposition coincide. To reject Jung Bahadoor's offers of assistance until our strength has been proved and now to accept them must have a good effect. Recommends Major Eyre for Ishapore Powder Factory. Praise of Bengal Artillery, and especially of several Officers named. Delay caused by Officer Commanding H.M.'s 34th Regiment'.

34. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 18 Dec 1857. 'Move of Brigadier Walpole upon Mynpoorie and composition of his force, Copy of his instructions enclosed. Delay caused by sending convoy to Sir James Outram. Commander in Chief hopes soon to be in communication with Brigadier Walpole at Bhowgong en-route to Futtehghur. Advance of Colonel Seaton's column upon Alighur and Etah. Asks for information relative to a rumoured advance upon Rohilcund. Force to be left at Cawnpore'. Enclosures: 1. 35. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 19 Dec 1857. 'Thanking for private letter, General Order, and extraordinary personal kindness. Message to Lady Canning. General Ashburnham's resignation received. Memorandum from Captain Peel R.N. upon sanitary improvements at Allahabad enclosed and recommended to notice [not enclosed]. Expects to leave on 22nd for Futtehghur Campaign'.
36. Letter from Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore, 19 Dec 1857. 'Suggests that Brigadier Inglis should be made Brigadier General and appointed to Command Cawnpore Division. Sir James Outram to no longer have titular command of Cawnpore and Dinapore Divisions'.

Effort made to show practically that merit is only road to advancement, the rule that Officers must not hols Staff appointments unless acquainted with vernacular is coming into operation. Retreat of Furruckabad Nawab upon Rohilcund [Rohilkhand]. State of Bundelcund [Bundelkhand] threatens the Dooab. Proposes Junction of Head Quarters with Seaton's force. Importance of keeping open road from Agra to Cawnpore. Urges for reasons assigned an advance into Rohilcund. Sufficient means not at hand to Cawnpore, Oudh and secure at same time the Trunk Road. Former operation should therefore be deferred till autumn of 1858'.
