'Commander in Chief will be ready to commence operations before Lucknow on the 18th - but it will be advisable to wait for Jung Bahadoor and Brigadier General Franks. The opinion of Governor General as to immediate operations or delay till Franks and the Jung arrive sought, but delay advocated. It would [give] the Proclamation time to operate. But the Commander in Chief able and ready to take Lucknow without delay'.

Colonel Clark obliged to retire before the Moulvie [Ahmadullah Shah, Maulavi of Faizabad], should not have been placed at Sandee. Mr Montgomery too sanguine. General Grant acting with great prudence at Lucknow. Head Quarters and Officers shall move at once to Allahabad if there is cover for them'.

She is close to the Hills of Nepaul [Nepal]. Thinks advisable to march the Troops forwards. Sir James Hope Grant will advance on the Raptee [Raptu River] tomorrow. Bolarao is not far from Toolsepore. Brigadier Rowcroft is order [sic] to halt for the purpose. Nana [Sahib] is moving North. Sir Robert Napier came up with Feroze Shah's party. Encloses: 1. 'Translation of a letter[?] from Bundeh Ally Mamoo Khan to the address of the Right Honourable the Lord Clyde', 17 Dec 1858 2.
