- Identification card (of recent date) in Bakewell's hand: 'July 1962 / The first series / To Venice'.
- (1). 'Sunday' (8 sheets, BOAC notepaper), with envelope franked 8 July 1962, Jamaica N.Y. Envelope addressed to Mrs Joan Bakewell, c/o American Express, Bocca da Piazza 1261, San Marco, Venice. Letter written on flight to New York. There are 8 sheets, numbered [1]-9, i.e. there is no sheet numbered 7.
- (2). 'Tuesday morn' (2 sheets, University of Wisconsin headed paper), with envelope franked 10 July 1962, Milwaukee. Envelope addressed to Mrs Joan Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice.
- (3). 'Sat.' [July 1962] (1 sheet, Hotel Algonquin headed paper, New York, with 1 sheet of headed paper not used). The lower right corner of the verso (following the signature 'H') has been cut away, with resulting small loss of text also on the recto.
- (4). 'Saturday' (4 sheets, Hotel Algonquin headed paper) with envelope franked but lacking date stamp [July 1962]. Addressed to Mrs Joan Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice.
- (5). 'Late' (1 sheet, Hotel Algonquin headed paper), with envelope franked 15 July 1962. addressed to Mrs Joan Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice. The letter refers to enclosed photograph of Pinter 'just now at Birdland, listening to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers'. The photograph (black and white, 90 x 60 mm, head and shoulders portrait) is annotated on the verso.
- (6). 'Wednesday' (1 sheet, typed), with envelope franked 18 July 1962, Richmond & Twickenham. Addressed to Mrs Joan Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice. A small portion (40 mm) of the penultimate line of the letter has been carefully cut out.
Letters received in 1963:
- Identification card and note (both of recent date) in Bakewell's hand: 'June 63 / To Venice'. The note refers to Pinter's movements as indicated in his letter of 25 June.
- (7) 'Tuesday' (2 sheets), with envelope franked 25 June 1963, London. Envelope addressed to Mrs J. Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice. Pinter travels to Berlin on Thursday. Both letter sheets have had portions cut out: the first sheet has a portion of a single line removed; the second sheet has been cut straight across and is lacking approximately the lower third of the sheet.
- (8). 'Wednesday' [3 July 1963] (2 sheets), with envelope franked 3 July 1963, Victoria Station. Envelope addressed to Mrs J. Bakewell, c/o American Express, San Marco, Venice. Letter written on Pinter's return from Berlin ('Last night we learned that Caretaker has been awarded special Silver Bear prize at Berlin'). Both sheets have had portions cut out: the first sheet has been cut from the left margin removing most of two lines (125 mm); the second sheet has had most of a single line removed (120 mm) and has also been cut straight across and is lacking the lower third of the sheet. The letter begins in black ink and continues (p. 2) in pencil.
