Leaves from the Genealogy of the Royal Houses of Spain and Portugal (the 'Portuguese Genealogy')
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents and decoration:
f. 1: Space left for Prologue with a full historiated border . In the upper section are the heraldic emblems of the Infante don Fernando, with the arms of the Portuguese royal family suspended from the gold architectural frame against a green ground. On either side are two wild men, one with a lion skin, the other with a leopard skin, both carrying clubs in one hand and a shield of Don Fernando in the other, bearing the inscription Salus vite'. A series of scenes on the left and lower edges portray historical battles between legendary figures and hybrid creatures, suggesting the mythical origins of Don Fernando's family in Hungary and the origins of the Hungarian people.
f. 2: 'CAP 1' in the upper margin, with space left for the Genealogical tree of Magog; the border contains eleven giants, with descent from Unor to Bofind, each carrying their attributes.
f. 3: Genealogical tree of the Kings of Leon and Castille, with the title 'TAVOA PRIMEIRA' above and with letters (a, b, c, d) representing the order of succession. The banner beneath reads 'TRONCO DOS REYS DE LIAM [sic] E CASTELA'. There are three tiers or generations:
- 1st or lower tier: Favila, the Visigothic duke, standing, and his wife, 'A Duquesa de Cantabria', holding an apple;
- 2nd tier: Don Pelayo, King of Asturias, son of Favila, wearing a crown and his queen, 'Ara Dona', holding a rosary;
- 3rd tier: King Favila, son of Pelayo, battling an ox, and Queen Ermesenda, daughter of Pelayo, with her husband Alfonso I of Asturias, both wearing crowns and her son, Vimara to her left, with a falcon on his arm.
In the border an angel holds the shield of Don Fernando. In the lower edge of the frame is a battle, with Christians defeating Muslims, probably Covadonga in 722.
f. 4: Genealogical tree of the Kings of Navarra, with the title once again, 'TAVOA PRIMEIRA' above, and the banner beneath reading (erroneously) 'TRONCO DOS REYS DARAGAM', as in fact this portrays the Kings of Pamplona. There are four levels or generations:
- 1st or lower tier: Iñigo Arista (d. 851/52), 1st King of Pamplona on a gold throne with a sword, and his Queen, Iniga, in a red dress;
- 2nd tier: Garcia Iñigez (reigned 851/52-881/82) son of Iñigo and his queen, doña Urraca, who holds a ring;
- 3rd tier: Sancho Garces I (d. 925), founder of the Jimena dynasty (Fortun Garces, son of Garcia Iñigez, is omitted)
Left margin: the Coronation of Garcia Inhegez; the death of Garcia and Queen Urraca; a miraculous vision of the cross; lower margin: a battle, probably between Sancho Abarca and the Moors at Pamplona.
