Contents and decoration:
f. 5:r Genealogical tree of the Kings of Navarre and Aragon, with five tiers or generations:
1st or lowest tier: Garcia Sanchez II de Pamplona (reigned 994-1000/04) son of Sancho Garces II (970-994), seated on his throne holding a sword, with his queen, 'Doña Costancia' (in fact, Jimena) reading a manuscript;
2nd tier: Sancho Garces III, 'el Grande' (1004-1035), holding a hatchet, and his two wives, Doña Maria on the left and Doña Elvira on the right;
3rd Tier: above Doña Maria are her sons, Fernando, Count of Castille and King of Leon (1037-1065), in armour, and Garcia Sanches III, King of Pamplona (c. 1012-1054), wearing a crown (both were sons of Doña Munia in reality); to their right is 'Rey Dom Sancho de Vasevenha', and on the right side are Don Garcia, holding an arrow and Don Gonzalo, with a falcon;
4th Tier: Ramiro I, King of Aragon (1035-1063), son of Sancho Garces and Doña Elvira, and his wife Ermesenda, reading a book;
5th Tier: A bastard son, Sancho Ramirez, pointing to his siblings, to his left, Bishop don Gonzalo, and on the right, Doña Sancha, Countess of Aragon, holding a mirror, and Doña Taresa.
Left margin: the Coronation of Garcia Inhegez (1851/2); the death of Garcia and Queen Urraca (994); a miraculous vision of the cross; lower margin: a battle, probably between Sancho Abarca and the Moors at Pamplona.
In the left of the frame is an image of a battle between Christians and Moors, perhaps the conquest of Benabarre by don Ramiro. In the lower part of the frame are two scenes from an episode in the life of Sancho 'el Grande'. He entrusted his favourite horse to his wife at Najero, and she was accused of adultery by his sons, who desired the horse, and imprisoned; here she is pronounced innocent by a monk of Najero just as her stepson, Ramiro is about to fight for her honour. On the right the three sons confess their treachery to the king, before the monk of Najero.
f. 5*r: Genealogical tree of the Kings of Aragon, with a banner beneath, reading: 'TRONCO DOS REYS D'ARAGON'; it follows from the diagram on f. 5r, with the successor of Ramiro I:
- 1st Tier: Sancho Ramirez or Sancho I of Aragon and V of Pamplona (1063-1094), shown lying dead, with a long grey beard and dressed in armour; his second wife, Felicia de Roucy, shown with her head on a pillow, perhaps dead;
- 3nd Tier (left): Pedro I of Aragon (1094-1104), son of Sancho I and his first wife, Isabel of Urgel, is shown as a small figure on the left, feeding a falcon; his wife, Ines, is labelled, 'Isabel' (their two sons died before their father);
- 2nd Tier: Ramiro II (1134-1137), monk and bishop, who succeeded his brother, Alfonso I, and his wife Ines de Poitou;
- 3rd Tier (centre): Petronila, daughter of Ramiro II and Ines, writing in a book; to the right is Raymond Berenguer IV, count of Barcelona and ruler of Aragon (1137-1162);
- 4th Tier: descendents of Petronila and Raymond, including Sancho of Aragon (left) and Dulce de Aragon (centre), holding a parrot.
The scenes in the margins probably represent the murder of King Sancho IV of Pamplona (above left), King Ramiro II giving up his kingdom to Raymond Berenguer before retiring to a monastery (centre left) and the conquests of Barbastro and Huesca (lower margin).
f. 6r: Genealogical tree, labelled 'TAVOA 1A', showing the legendary descent of Don Enrique of Portugal from Stephen, King of Hungary, in four tiers:
- 1st Tier: Sarolta and Geza, parents of St Stephen of Hungary (left); Gutud (this should be Gisela of Burgundy) and Henry (Enrique) II, Duke of Bavaria, parents of Gisela, wife of St Stephen (right);
- 2nd Tier: Stephen, King of Hungary (1000-1031), and his wife, Gisela of Bavaria, with Pedro of Aleman (right) and St Stephen's sister, wife of Guillermo, Duke of Venice (left);
- 3rd Tier: St Emerico, son of St Stephen (left), with a cross and book, Vazul or Basil, nephew of Stephen, who seized the throne and was blinded (right); in the centre, are Count Henry of Burgundy and his wife, Teresa of Leon, parents of Alfonso Enriquez, the first king of Portugal; above are their daughters, Teresa (left) and Sancha, holding a carnation (right).
In the left margin is an army besieging a city; the images in the lower margin probably represent Don Enrique of Portugal, leaving to intervene in the quarrel between Queen Urraca and King Alfonso of Aragon (left) and leaving Portugal, in a galley bearing his arms, for the Holy Land, to assist Baldwin, King of Jerusalem.
f. 7r : Genealogical tree of the kings and queens of Portugal, labelled 'TAVOA PRIMEIRA DOS REYS' (continues 'DE PORTUGAL on f. 8r) and 'TRO[N]CO DEL CO[N]DE DO[N] ANRIQUE':
- 1st Tier: Alfonso I of Portugal, (1139-1185) son of Enrique, crowned, beside his wife, Mafalda of Savoy, who is kneeling with a book;
- 2nd Tier: Children of Alfonso and Mafalda: King Sancho I (1185-1211) in the centre, with Pedro Alfonso and Urraca Alfonso on the left and Teresa, Countess of Flanders, Mafalda, who is looking in a mirror, and Urraca, Queen of Leon, on the right;
- 3rd Tier: Children of Sancho I, including Maria Paez de Ribera, Rodrigo Sanchez, Maria Aires de Fornelos, Martin Sanchez and Urraca Sanchez.
- Don Alfonso I Enriquez (b. r. 1139-1185) to Alfonso II (r. 1212-1223);
In the left margin are two battles, perhaps, Ourique in 1139 (above) and a battle between two Christian armies, the battle of Valdevez (1140/41) between Alfonso I of Portugal and Alfonso VII of Leon (below). In the lower margin is the port of Lisbon, with the Cathedral in a darker colour, and sailing ships outside the harbour.
