- Title:
- Joan Bakewell: Letters received from Harry Guest
- Scope & Content:
-
Letters received from the poet and Cambridge contemporary Harry Guest. Initially Michael Bakewell's friend, Guest quickly became close friends of both Michael and Joan, and subsequently became godfather to Harriet Bakewell (see Bakewell, The Centre of the Bed, p. 105).
The very earliest letters (from 1953) are addressed to Michael, and then to both Michael and Joan. Many of the letters are not dated, and lack envelopes. Many of the letters appear to date from 1950s/1960s.
The file includes the following (undated) poems by Guest:
- 'Letter written in the Tuileries';
- 'Listening to Sydney Bechet';
- 'Unfocussed Love';
- 'A Bar in Lerici';
- 'Stalking into your Eden let me come';
- 'To Harriet at 21';
- 'For Joan, on her Birthday' (with an accompanying letter to Jack Emery, dated 31 March 1993).
