Bakewell's prefatory 'Author's note' to her novel All the Nice Girls records: 'This is a novel grounded in fact. In the 1940s I was a schoolgirl at Stockport High School for Girls when it joined the Ship Adoption Scheme and adopted a merchant ship. Its captain and his wife became great benefactors of the school during the war and beyond.'
The file comprises complete copies of the Stockport High School Magazine (many of which have coloured tabs in situ indicating Bakewell's research) with the following dates:

- March 29 1951. The Editorial (p. 5) records that Joan Rowlands [Bakewell] has been awarded a 'Cheshire County University Scholarship tenable at Newnham College, Cambridge'. For Joan Rowlands's report on 'A Tour in the Netherlands', see pp. 29-30. See also p. 24 for her House Note ('Beale's'). On p. 26, Joan Rowlands is listed as a Senior Prefect.

- 'Stockport High School 1894-1974'. Two copies of a booklet by Josephine Sanderson. Foreword: 'In July, 1974, Stockport High School for Girls will close after giving eighty years' service to the local community. The school is being merged with Fylde Lodge High School in accordance with the local authority's plans for the provision of comprehensive education.'
