Thomas first met Lawrence Durrell in 1934 when Durrell frequented Commin’s where Thomas was working. They became lifelong friends and Thomas came to be considered part of the family. Over the years Thomas prepared bibliographies of Durrell’s writings, edited Durrell’s Spirit of Place, and acquired much of Durrell’s book collection, which in turn Thomas left to the British Library, alongside other Durrelliana collected by Thomas. Also includes one letter each from Jacqueline (Gerald's first wife) and Claude (Lawrence's third wife), and drawings by Sappho, Lawrence's daughter with his second wife, Eve.
