Talbot Collection: Silver intensification test by Harold White on a faded salted paper print. Photographer: William Henry Fox Talbot
- Scope & Content:
-
Mounted salted paper print of Talbot's photograph Articles of china (plate 3 of The Pencil of Nature). The original print, dating from c 1844, has been cut in half diagonally, the upper left side showing the results of silver intensification treatment, the lower right side showing the original faded print. This intensification experiment was carried out by Harold White, and there is a detailed note in his hand written on the back of the mount:
'Many calotypes have faded, but a proportion can be improved by means of a silver intensifier. This test was made in July 1945 using a formulae introduced by the Research Laboratories of Kodak Ltd.
It has the advantage that it preserves the colour unless the intensification is prolonged when the tone becomes much colder.
Another point which has been noted is, that if the calotype has faded very badly, there is a loss in the highlights when the print is intensified. While the shadows will attain a deep colour similar to the original condition, the highlights lack detail.
