- Title:
- Photograph Album of Anne McCabe. Photographer(s) A. de Hone and others
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-leather and maroon pebbled cloth album measuring 280 mm x 385 mm, with elaborate decorative inscription on front pastedown reading: Anne McCabe from Her Husband Xmas 1899. The identity of Anne McCabe's husband is unclear: although many of the photographs in the album relate to Robert Blair McCabe, who served in the Indian Civil Service in Assam, he cannot be the husband referred to in the inscription, since he died in the Assam earthquake of 1897 and his wife's name was Mabel.
The album contains the following photographs:
1. Head-and-shoulders portrait of Robert Blair McCabe (1854-1897), Bengal Civil Service
2. Grave of Robert Blair McCabe, Inspector General of Police, Assam, who was killed in the earthquake of 12th June 1897 at Shillong, aged 43 years
3-14. Before and after photographs of the effects of the Assam earthquake of 1897 in Shillong, including: Mr Garth's houses, where Mr McCabe was living at the time of the earthquake; Shella Puni native village; the Quinton Memorial; Deputy Commissioner's Court House; Shillong Church; Government House, Shillong.
15. 'Corner of our drawing room, J. R. S.'
16. Tomb of Lucy Agnes Rossenrode in Shillong cemetery, destroyed in the 1897 earthquake
17. Native Bazaar, Shillong, after the earthquake
18. European group with rifles (Robert Blair McCabe, reclining on ground, front)
19-21. Three Indian landscapes: two river scenes, one of a raised road
22. European couple
23. Grave of Robert Alexander Sylvester Faulknor (d. 1890), brother-in-law of Robert Blair McCabe
24. Kohima Station, Naga Hills in 1883 (probably photographed by De Hone)
25. Deputy Commissioner's house, Kohima, with group of Naga Dobashas (probably photographed by De Hone)
26. Cantonments, Kohima, Naga Hills in 1883. Print signed De Hone 1 in the negative
27-36. Ten small landscape views of river, jungle and hill scenery, some with captions stamped on the image. One of these reads: No. 1. Front view, Manipur Residency. Others are difficult to decipher
37. Interior of a hall, looking towards organ (Cheltenham Ladies College?)
38-41. Portraits of European men and women
42-46. Views of Cheltenham Ladies' College (one by the firm of George Washington Wilson) and portrait groups. These photographs may indicate ownership of the album at some point by Miss Joan Steward Haman McCabe, who was a mistress at Cheltenham Ladies' College up to around 1912 (see press cuttings relating to her career in Photo 1356/2).
47-51. Figures in costume for amateur theatricals
52-55. Four small snapshots of Shillong, dated December 1925, with pencilled notes on the reverse, showing the McCabe Memorial and McCabe Road. Loose in album
56-57. Two snapshots of an unidentified cemetery, possibly at Kohima, after World War II. Loose in album
