Letters sent from Australia by Peter Self to his mother, Lady Audrey Self, then resident in a nursing home in Brighton. In 1981, Peter Self married his third wife, Sandra Gough, and in 1982 he was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra. During this period, he chaired a major government enquiry into local government finance (1984-85).
Most letters are in the form of aerogrammes, and they include occasional contributions from Sandra (for her individual letters to Lady Self, see Add MS 89203/1/3/3). Letter writing to Lady Self seems to have been undertaken usually on a Sunday. The letters span 1983 to Lady Self's death in 1987.
