Charter of Gundulf (b. c. 1024, d. 1108), Bishop of Rochester, establishing the gift of St Andrew's, Rochester, with the assent of Anselm (b. 1033/4, d. 1089), Archbishop of Canterbury, and granting to the monks the churches of Wolewic, Darenteford, Suthane, Wilmintune, Chisolherst, Aeilesford [Wollwich, Dartford, Sutton at Hone, Wilmington, Chislehurst, and Aylesford, Kent], Retheresbelf [Rotherfield, Suffolk], Sturmuthe [Stourmouth, Kent], and the altar of St Nicholas in the Cathedral, with rents, from Lamhetha [Lambeth, Surrey]. Dated at Rochester, 20 September 1089; spurious.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
