Chirograph between J. [John White, r. 1236-58], prior of St Andrews, the convent of the same, and the Cistercian nuns of Haddington Priory, regarding the tithes of Helstanford, Drem, Haddington, Stefinston. Given at Lothian, before the whole chapter of that place.
Endorsed: in the same hand, ‘Composito nova int[er] nos [e]t moniales de Hadi[n]g[t]on.’
Affixed with three seals. First, an imperfect seal of Haddington Priory, lozenge, green, showing the crowned and draped Virgin with the Child on her lap, a cross above her right hand, a sprig or lily in her left, a fleur-de-lys beneath her, with the legend, ‘Sigill-… sancta marie de hadintvne.’
Second, an imperfect seal of David of Bernham, bishop of St Andrews (r. 1239-53), oval, green, full length figure of bishop, with cinquefoil and crescent on right, and the fragmentary legend, ‘…d dei gr…orvm…’ On reverse, the bottom of a throne, with a kneeling bishop below, hands clasped in prayer, with the fragmentary legend, ‘domine david ave gra…’
Third, an imperfect seal of Master Andrew, lozenge, green, with a full-length figure of a man, holding a closed book, on his right a saltire, on the left a cinquefoil, with the legend, ‘s[igillum] offici…lis e…scopi s[ancti] andree.’

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
