Papers relating to Self's treatment for the stage of his story 'Scale' originally collected in Grey Area (1994). The treatment was published in Conjunctions, No. 47 (2006), pp. 427-46. The file comprises:
- (1). [First draft], heavily annotated.
- (2). [Second draft], lightly revised (pp. 1-55, 28 double-sided sheets).
- (3). Typeset proof, annotated by Self, together with covering letter (5 Sep 2006) from Michael Bergstein, Managing Editor, Conjunctions.
- (4). Autograph notes (including a number of 'post-it' notes).
- (5). Song lyrics incorporated, printed from the internet ('Rhythm is a Dancer', 'America What Time Is Love', 'Mr Loverman', 'Ebeneezer Goode').
- (6). Social and political background research, including: text of John Major speech (Conservative Party Conference 1992); report of John Prescott's planning approval for two tower blocks on the site of Lots Road power station near Chelsea Creek; the festivals of Hanukkah and Divali; and some research on the year1993 supplied by Nick Papadimitriou (includes e-mail exchange with Self, Dec 2005). Also gathered in, two e-mails (both Dec 2005) from Amelia Fairney (Viking) and Jessica Berens (RAPt).
- (7). Contract correspondence (2002-06) with Wylie Agency, including messages from Andrew Wylie; and with Ian Osborne (Definitive Theatre, Berkeley Square).
