The file concerns the position of German Christian Missions following the end of the First World War, particularly in the Middle East and India.
The papers include correspondence from the Conference of Missionary Societies in Great Britain and Ireland concerning religious freedom in territories formerly belonging to Germany and Turkey in the Middle East, 1918-19; correspondence and papers by Hirtzel concerning religious tolerance and missionary work in the mandated territories, 1919; papers concerning the property of German missions in Africa, India, and elsewhere, 1917-19; memoranda and correspondence concerning the Basel Mission and Trading Society, 1917-18; correspondence concerning the need to allow the work of German missions to be taken over by any Protestant mission, not just Lutheran ones, 1919; and papers concerning the resumption of German missionary activity in India, 1920-22, including a letter to Hirtzel from the Archbishop of Canterbury, 5 March 1921.
