Glossed Book of Ezekiel
- Scope & Content:
-
This 12th-century manuscript contains the Book of Ezekiel with Gloss. The manuscript, according to Julian Harrison (unpublished note, see 'Davis80', Database of Bookbindings ( «http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/bookbindings» [accessed 02 March 2018]) was written by a French scribe in France or England. It may have been written at the Cistercian monastery of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire (founded in 1132): from 1135 onwards Fountains Abbey was subject to the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux at Ville-sous-la-Ferté and guided by Geoffrey of Ainai, a monk from Clairvaux. The manuscript, in any case, was at Fountains Abbey in the 12th or 13th century, as is indicated by a near contemporary ownership inscription (f. 1r), and probably remained there until the monastery was dissolved in 1539.
Contents:
ff. 1r-112v: The Book of Ezekiel with marginal and interlinear gloss, with prologues by St Gregory the Great (b. c. 540, d. 604), beginning: ‘Prophecie tempora tria sunt’; and St Jerome (b. 347, d. 420), beginning: ‘Ezechiel propheta cum Ioachim rege Iuda captivus ductus est in babilonem’.
Decoration:
1 large initial in green, with red and green penwork decoration (f. 1r). 2 smaller initials: 1 in red with green penwork decoration (f. 2r), and in 1 in green with red penwork decoration (f. 3r). Small initials in red or green, one with penwork decoration in the other colour (f. 9r). Small initials in brown. Highlighting of letters in yellow.
